We, the Sisters of the Living Word, are a community of 46 women religious founded in 1975 and headquartered in Arlington Heights, Illinois. Our Mission is to reflect and affirm the Word, Jesus, who frees the oppressed and gives new life.

Fifty-two weeks a year women religious stand with the poor and immigrants, teach children, fight injustice, heal the sick, share spirituality, empower women, defend the planet, promote peace, create community, offer hope…

But for one week, we shine the spotlight on women religious.

Sister Angela was born Arlene Loretta on June 21, 1940 into a very loving family. Her parents, Lillian and Arledge Ashbey lived in the Irish Channel of New Orleans, LA.

That’s the Fourth Sunday Psalm Response. This last week of Advent we invite God to help us to turn to see God in the days’ activities. We are asking for a contemplative way of being in this very busy week.

Revitalized Joy! This is what our SLW direction statement says is ours.

It’s all of ours. Not just joy, but revitalized joy. 

It never ceases to amaze me how creative my nieces and nephews are when they have to give “time outs” to their little ones in need of “behavior-attitude adjustments.” I was reminded of this when I started reflecting on the readings for the Second Week of Advent that call for spiritual “time outs,” in other words repentance and conversion.

We are saddened to share that Sister Jean Krieter passed away on November 29th, the First Sunday of Advent. She will be dearly missed.

175 congregations of women religious pray for peace on Election Day; Sisters will offer perpetual prayers for 24 hours

40 days of prayer lead up to next phase of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform. The prayer campaign supports the seven sectors joining the Laudato Si’ Action Platform with a dedicated day of prayer for each, connecting each sector with a Laudato Si’ Goal.

I greet you during this Easter season, those 50 days after Easter Sunday and before Pentecost, which will be celebrated this year on May 23rd. It is a time characterized by the joy of the glorified life and the victory over death expressed most fully in the great resounding cry of ALLELUIA.
