Trusting in God’s Providence — Sharing in Mutuality with the Poor and Marginalized

We recognize in the core values of the Sisters of the Living Word the same message as Isaiah when he writes, “He has sent me to bring good news to the poor, to bind up hearts that are broken.”

Paul says “care for the weak and be patient with everyone.”

Jesus himself says, “Whatever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto me.”

My friend Marcella often met homeless persons as she walked from home to school. When they asked for money, she told them, “I am sorry I have none but I would be glad to have a cup of coffee and talk with you.” Dunkin’ Donuts was the scene of many a time of listening and sharing - real respect and mutuality.

Where are your opportunities for mutuality with the poor and oppressed? I remember getting a meal for a very poor homeless man and asking him if there was anything else he wanted. He answered, “Yes, I would like it if someone would once call me by my first name.” (It’s Pete.). Bless him and free all the poor and oppressed.

Let us pray:

Jesus, you had deep love for the poor and spent time with them, listening to their requests, curing, bringing good news, being without a place to lay your head, eating and drinking with sinners - in every way being MUTUAL with everyone.

Jesus, living within me, help me to love everyone as you do. Amen.
