Sr.
Stella Stacken, SLW
My birth, my
parents, my childhood, my calling have been one blessing after
another. It was through the influence of a Sister who supervised
us on the playground in elementary school that awakened in me
the call to religious life.
Wanting to
be of service to others I decided to become a sister and devoted
many years of my life to the education of youth. In 1975, I
joined the newly founded Community of the Sisters of the Living
Word where I continued my ministry in education, for I believe
education is the springboard in one’s life.
Now that I
have passed on to others this important torch of teaching, I
assist in our Community’s Finance Office. Here, too, there are
opportunities for service to others.
Living in
Illinois gives me the opportunity to join with many other
religious communities in sponsoring Project IRENE, an
organization that advocates legislation that will benefit women
and children. Our phone calls, emails, and letters to State
Senators and Representatives have helped to influence systemic
change and thereby “freed the oppressed.”
Having
Associates who share our spirit of bringing life to others has
been very encouraging. I have the opportunity to be part of an
Associate discussion group in Chillicothe, Illinois. It is
edifying to hear stories of their faith journeys, their love of
God and neighbor.
All in all,
my life has been very blessed, and I have had many opportunities
for service to others. In turn, I have received many services
and blessings!
